In 1995 founder Rose Walton, who has a son with intellectual disabilities, could not find a place for her son to stay while she worked. He was 15 years old, and research revealed that there were no programs in the area for teenagers or young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. In June of 1999, with personal savings and a loan from the Louisville Central Community Center, she opened Exceptional Teens & Adults Adult Daycare Center. In August of 1999 ETA Teen Center opened for teenagers and school-aged young adults. In 2002, ETA Teen Center Inc. became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The beginning of growth came in 2008, when Exceptional Teens & Adults moved to its current location at 724 W Breckinridge Street. The growth continues with our major Capital Campaign, renovating our remaining space into a gymnasium and center for the teen program.
